The Town Hall next to the Kleine Alster
Located along the picturesque Elbe River, Hamburg is a vibrant city that offers a fantastic combination of history, culture, and modernity. Known as Germany’s “Gateway to the World,” this maritime city offers an eclectic blend of old-world charm and contemporary flair.
You can wander through the historic Speicherstadt district, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where red-brick warehouses line winding canals and immerse yourself in art and music at the Elbphilharmonie, an architectural masterpiece that dominates the city’s skyline.
For a taste of local life, explore the neighborhood of Ottensen or take a leisurely stroll along the Alster Lake where locals congregate in the evening for a beer and a picnic.
As a vegan and conscious traveler, you will be delighted by Hamburg’s vegan scene. From cozy cafes to traditional German restaurants, there are truly some great gems to discover.
But first, let’s see what accommodation options you can find in Hamburg as a vegan traveler!
Hamburg is Germany’s second biggest city after the capital of Berlin. It has the same progressive attitude, yet a more Nordic character because of its proximity to Denmark and Scandinavia.
One of the most remarkable features of this city is its location by the Elbe River and the Alster Lakes, which you can find in the middle of Hamburg. This gives the city an open feel and you wouldn’t say at all that 2 million people reside here permanently!
One of the coolest things here is that public transport is not limited to metro, buses, and tramways but there’s also a public ferry service on the Elbe River that allows you to travel from one part of Hamburg to the other. How cool is that?
Furthermore, Hamburg boasts the UNESCO World Heritage site of Speicherstadt, has a dozen quirky vegan bars and restaurants, and Floschanze, a lovely Saturday flea market.
Unfortunately, there are no hotels or accommodation options in Hamburg that are 100% vegan. Nevertheless, there are hotels in Hamburg that cater to vegans by adding vegan options to their breakfast and restaurants menu.
Furthermore, since there are a lot of vegan cafes and restaurants in Hamburg, it’s not that difficult to find a great place to have breakfast. In the second section, you can find some wonderful accommodation options that are located within walking distance of some fantastic places to have breakfast.
At the end of the post, you can find the only 100% vegan hotel that is in the vicinity of Hamburg. It will require you to drive to Hamburg but is great for visiting the city on a day trip.
In the next section, you can four hotels in Hamburg that cater to vegan travelers. Their menus are adjusted to cater to the needs of vegans and this goes beyond just giving you a salad!

Just as in Arcotel Onyx, the onsite breakfast restaurant, Facette, offers a vegan breakfast option for plant-based travelers. Furthermore, the hotel is also pet-friendly.
Vegan hotel Hamburg: Schanzenstern Altona
Schanzenstern Altona is not the most luxurious hotel in Hamburg but it certainly is cozy and holds a bit of a local flair compared to the previously mentioned chain hotels.
