Mylopotamos Beach: Everything you need to know (2024)

Traveling to the Pelion region in Greece in the near future? The Pelion Peninsula is home to dozens of outstanding beaches and one of them is Mylopotamos Beach. Read this guide to find out everything you need to know before paying a visit to this wonderful natural destination!

Mylopotamos beach

Mylopotamos beach, Pelion, Greece

Mylopotamos Beach is a gorgeous beach on the mainland of Greece in the Thessaly region. It is surrounded by lush green cliffs and actually consists of three smaller beaches interconnected by a hole in one of the rocks on the left side and a winding staircase next to the sea on the right side.

Although it seems like a wild and deserted beach at first glance, the area caters to tourists and you can find sun loungers on the beach, umbrellas and there are several restaurants nearby.

The sand is a nice mix of sand and pebbles and doesn’t hurt the feet although it’s more safe to swim in the area with reef shoes or something alike to prevent you from cutting your feet at sharp pieces of rock.

Where is Mylopotamos Beach?

Mylopotamos Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Pelion and is located on the eastern side of the peninsula near the town of Tsagarada.

You can drive all the way to the beach to find a small parking area to park your car. The way to Mylopotamos Beach can be found easily on Google Maps. From the parking area, you will see stairways and small pathways leading you to the beaches.

Things to do at Mylopotamos Beach

Beachtime often means chill time and that is exactly what Mylopotamos Beach offers. Do note that the main beach can get crowded in the summer and has a bit of a hipster status which can sometimes result in visitors playing music and drinking beer.

Mylopotamos Pelion: Staircases by the rocks surrounding the beach

Walking through the rock opening on the left-hand side of the beach offers an opportunity to sit more quietly, away from the sunloungers and umbrellas. It’s by far the most lush part of the beach with little human intervention.

The beach on the right-hand side harbors a vacation house and has a very rocky beach. You can participate in rock climbing here, although the bolts are very rusty and doesn’t seem quite safe.

Aside from that, there are four places on Mylopotamos Beach where you can have a bite or a drink.

Restaurants at Mylopotamos Beach

Giant Beans (Gigantes)

Gigantes, a delicious Greek bean dish

The three restaurants at Mylopotamos are not located on the main beach. On the main beach, you can find a beach bar, that also rents out the sun beds and umbrellas but I would not suggest you go there. They just sell drinks but don’t serve food. Instead, try one of these restaurants:

  • Aggelika fish taverna: this is an incredible restaurant with warm and attentive staff serving delicious traditional Greek food. They mainly serve fish but can also cater to vegans in Greece with lovely dishes like Gigantes (giant beans), aubergine dip, and salad.
  • Café del Mare: Café del Mare offers the most beautiful terrace I’ve seen in Pelion and it was a joy to hang out there, especially in the morning before all the tourists arrive. Café del Maré is excellent for coffee, a smoothie, or some vino or tsipouro but I’d rather go to Aggelikka’s for a full meal. Greek pie, pizza, and sandwiches are on offer though.
  • Kritamo: Kritamo is located a bit further away from the beach but is nevertheless picturesque and typically Greek. You don’t need to take the road to reach the restaurant but you can walk from the main beach through the forest to reach the terrace. On the many, you can find typical Greek dishes. Aubergine dip, fries, salad and fried zucchini.

Where to stay near Mylopotamos beach

Mylopotamos, Pelion Greece

Accommodation Mylopotamos Beach Pelion

There is one summer house for rent on the beach to the right of the main beach and a hotel in walking distance called Lighthouse Hotel. I will give a short description of what to expect here but I would opt personally to stay a bit further away, where there are more options.

Mylopotamos beach house

If you want to stay at a beach house close to the sea then don’t look further than Mylopotamos Beach House. Offering two rooms and a small terrace, this accommodation is literally located on the beach. Do note that the pathway and stairs that connect the beaches run right behind the house so there isn’t a real sense of privacy.

Lighthouse hotel (Faros)

If you’re a conscious traveler looking for a hotel that is quiet, peaceful, and offers a serene atmosphere, look no further than Lighthouse Hotel. The rooms of this hotel are bright, spacious, and spotlessly clean while the restaurant serves traditional Greek dishes with produce from their own organic garden.

In front of the hotel are rock pools and a large terraced garden with sun loungers with incredible views over the Aegean Sea. Do note that you need to drive down a very steep road full of hairpins to reach the hotel.

Sunrise Tsagarada

Going more inland, away from the beach you will find the town of Tsagarada. In this village, you can find several restaurants and also little supermarkets allowing for a comfortable stay. There are several local guesthouses in Tsagarada but, if you fancy some eco-luxury, consider renting a villa at Sunrise Tsagarada.

The design of the buildings is made to perfectly fit into the natural environment using bioclimatic architecture and natural materials

Katerina Fotopoulos Rooms and apartments

If you’re keen to explore multiple locations in Pelion, the best place I can recommend you to stay is Katerina Fotopoulos Rooms and Apartments. Not only is Katerina an incredible host but the location of this guesthouse is unbeatable. Aside from the lovely rooms and communal space, you can find a yoga deck right by the sea here, offering ultimate peace and connection with nature.

Katerina Fotopoulos Rooms and Appartments is located 15 kilometers from Mylopotamos Beach.

How to get to Mylopotamos Beach

Damouchari, Pelion, Thessaly, Greece

Pelion, Greece

Getting to Mylopotamos Beach is easy if you are already staying in Pelion. You can find the location of Mylopotamos in Google Maps. Do note that driving the Pelion Peninsula is not for the faint of heart!

The Pelion peninsula is hilly. The roads are small, with a lot of hairpins and ravines that are not fenced down. Unfortunately, you do need your own vehicle to visit Pelion. There is no reliable public transport in the area.

The best way to reach Pelion and Mylopotamos Beach is to fly into Thessaloniki and rent a car at the airport or alternatively take a bus or train to the city of Volos and rent a car there.

Other beautiful beaches nearby

Mylopotamos Beach is not the only gorgeous beach on the Pelion peninsula. Here are three more incredible beaches nearby! Pelion is an excellent destination for slow travel and you can spend weeks exploring every beach on the Peninsula.

Fakristra beach

Fakistra Beach, Pelion, Greece

Fakistra beach

Fakistra Beach is a remote beach by the Aegean Sea surrounded by rocky cliffs and lush greenery. If you’re looking for a beach in Greece where you can enjoy some privacy and live out your Robin Crusoe dreams then this is your best bet.

As with every off-the-beaten-path location, it requires a little effort to get here. The only way down to the beach is a steep 200 meters mountain path that becomes more of a rocky cliff trail at the end.

Papa Nero Beach

Papa Nero beach, Mouresi, Pelion, Thessaly, Greece

Papa Nero Beach has tourist facilities but is still quiet enough to not be disturbed by the nuisance of other visitors. There’s a great family-owned restaurant on the beach (which has no English name) offering delicious (vegan) dishes like fava with bread and Gemista (stuffed peppers).

Beach volleyball and beach paddle ball are often played on the beach and it’s easy to hike to the nearby beaches of Agios Ioannis and Damouchari.

Damouchari beach

beaches in Pelion: Damouchari Beach

Damouchari Beach

Damouchari is a tiny picturesque coastal village in Pelion Greece. The beach here is a mix of pebbles and sand and the water is crystal-clear surrounded by rocks which makes it a perfect beach for snorkeling.

Although tiny, the beach became quite famous when the movie “Mamma Mia” chose Damouchari to shoot a few scenes here for the film in 2007.
