Eco Hotels Berlin & More: Sustainable Stays in the Capital of Germany

When you visit Berlin there are thousands of accommodation options to choose from. Where to start? As a conscious traveler, there are a few things you can keep in mind while scanning through hotel websites. Sustainable accommodation generally wants to do three things: do good for people, do good for the environment and do good for animals. This translates into certain actions that they take to built and organize their business. Sustainability can have many faces. In either case, it is important to look for businesses who are very clear about their efforts regarding sustainability and don’t just use it as a fashion word. To make it easy for you, I will hereby share my list of favorite eco-hotels, hostels and Airbnb’s in Berlin and why they are sustainable.

Sustainable hotels in Berlin

Eco hotels in Berlin: Bio Hotel Almodovar Berlin, Germany.

Eco hotel Berlin: Bio Hotel Almodovar

Eco hotels in Berlin: Bio Hotel Almodovar

(This hotel closed its door forever in September 2022. You can still however book their sustainable villas in Marbella!)

Bio hotel Almodovar is located in Friedrichshain, a busy but extraordinary area to stay at in Berlin. On Sundays, it’s only a short walk to the neighborly fleamarket located on Boxhagener Platz and there are some great vegan restaurants close by like 1990 vegan living, Voner and li.ke.

The hotel really stands out regarding sustainable practices. Their restaurant, Bistro Bardot, is 100% vegetarian and all ingredients are organic, fairtrade and/or locally sourced. The breakfast buffet on offer is 95% vegan which makes it one of the most vegan-friendly hotels in Europe. They try to reduce their environmental impact by using energy-saving technology. They heat and cool the hotel with a heat pump and only use electricity from renewable energy sources.

In the rooms, the floors are made of wood from sustainable forestry, bedding and towels are made of organic, natural fabrics and cosmetics are natural and certified. You can also find a yoga mat in the room if you want to unwind from a hectic day of sightseeing. This is the best option out of all the eco hotels in Berlin!

Prices start at € 89 for a double room.

Eco hotels in Berlin: The Circus hotel

If you like to stay in the city center then The Circus is your best choice. This hotel offers rooms but also apartments with self-catering facilities. The rooms come with a flat-screen TV but there is no fridge or air-conditioning and this is a conscious choice they make to save energy.

They use green electricity which is CO2-free, have solar voltaic panels on the roof and implemented a strict waste strategy. Cosmetics in the room are organic and traditionally manufactured and they support charity in Berlin and around the world. Recently, for example, they raised money to support the people of Beirut after the explosion in august 2020.

In the neighborhood of the hostel, you can find great restaurants like Kopps (100% vegan), Ryong (vegetarian) and health food restaurant Daluma which is vegan-friendly.

Prices start at € 112 for a double room.

Eco hotels in Berlin: Lulu Guldsmeden

This eco hotel in Berlin is not locally owned but it’s a small chain that originated in Denmark. Despite not being a local hotel, they make great efforts regarding sustainability. The hotel is Greenkey certified which among other things means they measure their CO2 footprint and have a strict policy regarding energy and water use.

The hygge rooms have vintage armchairs, hand-crafted lamps from Bali, sustainable oak wood furniture and organic linens and toiletries. Bikes can be rented at the hotel to explore the city.

Although produce is organic and locally sourced, they only have one vegetarian main dish (a lasagna) on the menu at the restaurant. Nothing is indicated as vegan. Good lunch spots close by with many vegan options on the menu are Humble Berlin and My Deli Love.

Prices start at € 76 for a double room.

Here are some more eco-friendly hotel options in Berlin! They are, in general, larger hotel chains and I like to stay in more local places but these ones are definitely better in terms of sustainability than others!

Sustainable stays with locals

Staying with locals is a good choice for eco-minded travelers. Firstly, at accommodation like this, you live as you do at home and it is not as energy and water consuming as a big hotel. An analysis conducted by Cleantech group in 2014 found that staying at an Airbnb property was significantly more eco-friendly than staying at a traditional hotel which makes complete sense.

Secondly, local stays are often located more off the beaten path which is good to combat overtourism in certain areas and make your experience more authentic. Locals can also give you great tips on what to do outside the tourist trail.

When scanning sites like Airbnb, be sure that you will rent from a local and not, for example, a rental agency that advertises on Airbnb. Personally, I like it when the ads on Airbnb really reflect the personality of the owner, either in the interior or in the description so I know who I will get involved with. In general, I am sold when I see things like “organic market nearby”, vegetarian/vegan restaurant nearby, cultural/artistic area and cat lover (or animals in general).

Eco hotels in Berlin: Your sweet home

Your Sweet Home Berlin

Your sweet home

The private studios of Your Sweet Home are located in Schöneberg, a tranquil part of the city, yet close to all the action. Owner Rainer, Berliner in heart and soul, will welcome you warmly and sit with you to explain everything you need to know about the studio and the area.

The bed is comfy, the kitchen well equipped and it has a little terrace where you can sit outside without city noise.

Opposite the studio, you can find a bio supermarket and there’s a cute bakery called Brezel a little further down the street (when vegan, ask about options). You can find great restaurants in the area for example Tianfuzius (vegetarian), Chay Village (vegetarian) and the lovely Buddha Haus (many vegan options). If you’re into Kombucha, be sure to visit Barbucha.

Prices start at € 65/night for a studio.

Airbnb at Bergmannkiez

This Airbnb has a great location in Kreuzberg. Bergmannkiez is truly a gem with many great restaurants and shops. If you want to buy fresh produce head to Marheineke Markthalle which also houses a branch of the vegan Supermarket Veganz.

To dine out head to Goodmorning Vietnam to indulge in delicious vegan Vietnamese fare. This restaurant is located next to a huge secondhand store called Picknweight where you can find real bargains.

Feel like a stroll in nature? The beautiful Victoria Park and former airport Tempelhofer Feld are nearby.

Prices start at € 60/night.

Eco hostels in Berlin

Eco hotels in Berlin: A&O hostel en hotel Berlin, Germany.

A&O hostel and hotel Berlin

A&O hostel and hotel Friedrichshain

A&O hostels and hotels is a small German chain with different branches across Germany but started out about 20 years ago with this hostel in Friedrichshain. If you want quality for a cheap price then this is your best bet. And of course, they make efforts regarding sustainability. You can choose between different room types and, although the building has a hostel vibe, private rooms really have a hotel feel.

Throughout the building, they use energy-saving lamps and showerheads to reduce water consumption. Rooms are free of any plastic. They do regular CO2 checks and, due to their business model, emissions are three times lower than other accommodation options in this category. Furthermore, they rent out bicycles, have a book swap library and support projects regarding education and climate protection.

The area of this hostel is excellent. It is closely located to the Sunday flea market at Boxhagener Platz and you can find many great veggie restaurants nearby like Voner, Bistro Bardot and 1990 living vegan. Next to the hostel is a bio supermarket.

Price start at € 9 / dorm and € 38 / double room.

The Circus Hostel

As the name says, this hostel is a part of the Circus Hotel and is located on Weinbergsweg, close to the hotel. They offer dorms as well as private rooms with or without shared bathroom facilities.

Same as the hotel, they use green electricity which is CO2-free, have solar voltaic panels on the roof and implemented a strict waste strategy. Cosmetics in the room are organic and traditionally manufactured and they support charity in Berlin and around the world.

In the neighborhood of the hostel, you can find great restaurants like Kopps (100% vegan), Ryong (vegetarian) and health food restaurant Daluma which is vegan-friendly.

Prices start at € 18 / dorm and € 61 / double room (with shared bathroom).

Jetpak Eco Lodge

Jetpak Eco Lodge is located outside the city center in the beautiful Grunewald forest. Even though it’s quite far, the city center is in easy reach with public transport and they also rent out bikes.

Jetpak Eco Lodge has a CO2-neutral heating system, uses 100% green power and the water is heated by solar panels. Waste is divided and recycled and food leftovers are composted onsite.

If you fancy visiting Berlin but like to sleep safe and sound away from the hustle and bustle of the city than this is a good choice. Inside the forest, you can venture to Krumme Lanke or Schlachtensee, two lakes where you can swim and hang out late with some drinks and a picnic during summer.

Prices start at € 20 / dorm and € 54 for a double room (with shared bathroom).
