Surf Shops Ericeira: Where to Find the Best Surf Gear

Traveling to Ericeira in the near future? Then chances are you like to surf! Ericeira is known for being the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe. In the summertime, a lot of beginners come to Ericeira, to enjoy one of the many organized surf camps, often combined with yoga and healthy eating. During the winter, more advanced surfers come to Ericeira to get a kick out of the big swell. No matter what your level is, here is a consciously curated list of surf shops in Ericeira so you can find whatever you’ll need to conquer those waves!

Ericeira

Ericeira, Portugal

Ericeira, Portugal.

Ericeira is a small fishing village located in the municipality of Mafra. It is known for its picturesque cobblestone streets and beautiful white and blue houses. There are some great beaches in Ericeira, and the ocean is dotted with surfers most of the year.

It takes about a 40-minute drive to get from Lisbon to Ericeira if you are traveling by car. There are some great guesthouses and small hotels in Ericeira like Olive3 hostel and Eco Soul Guesthouse.

If you plan on surfing in Ericeira, you can opt to take surf lessons at one of the surf schools or join a surf camp, which often combines surfing with yoga and other holistic wellness treatments.

Surf shops Ericeira

There are a lot of surf shops in Ericeira. You can find most of them in the cobblestone streets of the town center. The two largest ones, Boardriders Quicksilver, and 58 Surf shop are located on the main road between Ericeira and Ribamar.

Whether you are a beginner or a more advanced surfer, you can find everything surfer-related in these shops. Do be aware that big and famous surf brands like Billabong and Quicksilver are not ethical. They are not transparent about their manufacturing process, don’t pay living wages to their workers, and don’t use environmentally-friendly fabrics and materials to create their products.

There are however a few small concept stores in Ericeira that do offer more ethical and sustainable alternatives. Here is a list of seven surf shops in Ericeira!

Mothersurf

Mothersurf, Ericeira.

Mothersurf is a surf shop located in the center of Ericeira at Rua Mendes Leal (it is next to Pizzeria Pepe Verde which offers vegan pizza!). Monthersuf is an ethical and sustainable surf and lifestyle concept store.

The concept store offers a carefully curated collection of excellent brands that do care for the earth. Aside from conscious surf gear, you can also find a great selection of lifestyle products like shampoo bars, bags, and reusable straws.

Magic quiver surf shop

Magic quiver surf shop Ericeira

Magic quiver is a small surf shop located in the center at Rua Dr. Eduardo Burnay. Magic quiver is known for supporting independent artists, designers, and shapers of surfboards.

Aside from that they also sell a range of clothes, books, and yoga and surf wear, like Oy surf which is ethically made.

58 surf shop

Surfshop 58, Ericeira.

58 surf is a gigantic surf shop on the road from Ericeira to Ribamar. As often with these large stores, the goods they sell are in most cases not sustainably made. Here you can find brands like Billabong and Element which are not ethical but they do also sell wetsuits from Patagonia, which is a good thing.

If you care about your ecological footprint, you have to know which brands make an effort to be sustainable if you shop here! A good app where you can check whether a brand is sustainable is GoodOnYou

Boardriders quicksilver

Surf shop Ericeira: boardriders quicksilver

Boardriders Quicksilver is another huge surf shop on the road from Ericeira to Ribamar. It is a popular spot in Ericeira because it’s close to the surf beach of Praia do Matadouro and also offers a skate park next to the shop.

While Quicksilver claims on their website to do a lot for the environment, like making shorts out of 100% recycled materials and donating to clean water initiatives, they are not transparent about their manufacturing process and don’t disclose their policies so the statements on their website are probably greenwashing.

Surf and skate Ericeira

Ericeira surf & skate shop

Ericeira surf and skate is located in the center of Ericeira. Just like the large stores on the way from Ericeira to Ribamar they offer gear and clothes of mostly non-sustainable brands, like Billabong, Adidas, Element, and so on.

They do offer sneakers from the brand Cariuma so if you’re looking for that it’s worth coming here.

Wavegliders surf shop

Wavegliders, Ericeira.

Wavegliders is, as Mothersurf, located on the Rua Mendes Leal. What distinguishes this surf shop from the other ones in Ericeira is that the boards they sell are manufactured in their own factory located in Mafra, which is only ten kilometers away from Ericeira.

On the other hand, the brands they sell in their shop, for example, Carhartt and Rhythm are not sustainable brands.

Billabong

Surf shop in Ericeira: Billabong

As the name says, this is a shop from the brand Billabong. Billabong is a very popular surf brand but is known to not be sustainable and ethical. Aside from Billabong, they also sell clothes, shoes, and accessories from other brands like Converse and Vans.

Waterbound

I haven’t visited this shop myself but I found it online when I was doing my research for this post en it appears to be an ethical enterprise!

They created their own label and all their clothes and accessories are made with 100% organic cotton or recycled materials. I’m not sure if the other brands they sell (Hippy Tree and Salty Crew) are ethical though but it’s a positive thing they produce their own sustainable items!

Surf shops Ericeira: Final thoughts

I am not a surfer myself but I was curious about how ethical and sustainable surf brands are while wandering through the streets of Ericeira. Because surfing embodies a feeling of becoming one with the ocean, you would think that surf gear and clothes would be made with respect towards the earth and our natural beauty.

Unfortunately, I came to a different conclusion. Popular brands like Quicksilver and Billabong are not ethical or sustainable. When you travel to Ericeira to surf, skip the big stores on the road from Ericeira to Ribamar and visit the smaller stores in the center like Mothersurf, Waterbound, and Magic Quiver and buy a locally manufactured surfboard at Wavegliders!

ENJOY!
